I have a veridical dear of Weird Horror fiction – the sort of story with bizarre and surrealist imagery . Valentin Petit ’s new light film , Anthophobia , remove all of the right buttons , and it ’s impossible to calculate away from .
The picture starts off with a verbal description : anthophobia is a morbid dislike or even fear of flowers . The resulting pic is n’t so much a cohesive storey as it is a collection of imagery that really evokes a floor of dread . Petit ’s counselling behind the tv camera is sensational – his steady camera study and overhead drone pipe blastoff set the creepy-crawly scene as a horrifying voiceover narrates . Everything about this short film is beautiful : the color , motion-picture photography and camera angles .
Weird Horror is in a sort of fresh ascendancy lately , with novels like Jeff Vandermeer ’s Annihilation or telly show such as reliable Detective drawing on some of the older literary image from the like of H.P. Lovecraft and Thomas Ligotti .

I ’d love to see something longer come out of this : the camera work absolutely sets up the correct variety of modality , and Petit has an eye for the unsettling here .
