It ’s a joke , of course of study , but it ’s also a consummate example of just how off the wall everyone behind Birds of Prey require the movie to be . First of all , though no one would ‘ fess up to this being a hard - universal gas constant snitch movie , the number of “ fucks ” in the five - minute scene being shot when we were on hardening , most of them screamed by a pre - teen fille , suggested otherwise .
“ Pulp Fiction meets Rashomon ” is how director Cathy Yan describes the movie , which is a “ standalone origin chronicle ” for the Birds of Prey , concord to manufacturer Sue Kroll , and determine almost in a “ parallel universe of discourse , ” according to Yan . The only thing abide in their way is the unlikely scenario where Harley , Huntress , Canary , and Renee Montoya squad up to block off them . The scene we see shot back in March fundamentally brings all of those storylines and characters together in a tense , funny , third - act scene that set up the stage to what ’s likely a massiveaction set piecepitting the ever - combustible Birds of Prey against a shit load of street gangs .
The floor was to be grounded too , with much lower stakes than most superhero movies , and so Robbie said sheand author Christina Hodson startedwith one character as the way into that . “ It really started with Huntress , ” Robbie said . “ I just enjoy Huntress , and with my initial pitch on the history , I say I need to keep it quite contained , get no bigger , and no world - ending stakes . Like the stakes were as freehanded as perhaps mafia level or gang spirit level as kind of a basis . ”

From there , it was kind of just build up a squad that Robbie thought was correct .
“ After Huntress , it kind of flesh out from there , ” she say . “ Which other members kind of counterbalance her revenge story , and Harley ’s edition of what ’s right and incorrect ? You kinda needed a more moral lineament like Renee Montoya — we take a fuzz in there . Canary obviously is so all-important to the Birds of Prey , we really want to inclose her as well . And then Cas , Christina , the author , and I actually speak about a stack of our favorite celluloid , and wanted to make up homage to a few things , but , Leon : The Professional was one of them , and we just know that relationship — the mentor and mentee , a very unexpected friendly relationship there . We kind of ascertain ourselves gravitating towards that as well . ”

Aesthetically Birds of Prey has that same kind of rabble , eclectic , diverse vibration . It palpate like a world that we ’d desire to explore more of . Something unparalleled and vibrant . “ I wanted to kind of blow - up whatever my bias was of a comic book character or ‘ heroes world ’ , ” say Barrett . “ Make it bulge out yet muddy because I felt like those were the streets that Harley step through untouched . She can kind of go anywhere . She can go high-pitched , she can go modest . Nothing move her and she comes through unscathed . ”
To that gist , all the costumes were design to work in very specific dark time light and even the props all have some sort of unearthly , killer clown around aesthetic — just spikes and wires and everything really bright and messy . Even the vista we take in snap took place on top of a funhouse called the Booby Trap , which will feature huge slides , trampoline and more , like a real - biography , indoor carnival .
And yet , Robbie and the team know this is at last Harley Quinn ’s flick so fan will get her neat hit . She has roller skate , pet hyaena , and a stuffed opera hat named Bernie . You ’ll belike see some sorting of heavy hammer . One thing she wo n’t have is that pestiferous boyfriend of hers , the Joker .
“ Something I explored a lot in Suicide Squad was Harley ’s cobalt - dependence with the Joker , ” Robbie said . “ evidently he has a huge influence on her . But … I did want to search what is the variant of Harley out of a relationship , and whether she ’s out of the relationship on her own accord or his , if he kind of kicked her to the American Stock Exchange , it still touch her , but in a very different way . And I thought we ’d see a very unlike aspect of her personality . ‘ personality ’ I would say , cause I remember she has multiple . ”

That delineate Birds of Prey , too . A movie with multiple personalities . Something that will be cognisant ofother DC moviesbut trying to blaze out its own track . Something that create its own look and feel but also borrows from the comics . Things may even get emotional and touching along the way .
“ To me , the write up ’s super compelling and personal because it is about emancipation , ” Yan said . “ About women almost being competitive with one another and get each other down , but also because of our own inabilities to feel so powerless and the throttlehold that is the patriarchy … Especially , I think , set against the background of ‘ Me Too ’ and what has been hap in our industry in the last few years . So that definitely infiltrate its way into my pitch as well . So , for me , this film was so much more than a superhero film about like and the first girl crowd film or any of that . It really has a compelling tale and subject to it that is very , very personal . ”
