Caltech researchers may have unlocked the holy grail of gadget - powering clothing , thanks to a recent discovery that could finally produce cheap , flexible solar cell microfibers .
The team , led by Harry Atwater , says the bendy solar jail cell use just 1 % of the silicon needed by a solar cell with the same output signal . to boot , the bendy mobile phone does this with only 5 % of the size of it . The base that “ grows ” the micrometer - wide silicon wires is also reusable , further lessening the next costs of a pair of theoretical Gap Gadget khakis . well still , the Caltech cells are effective , reflect back only about half as much energy as a alike sized “ traditional ” cell .
So they ’re small , conciliatory and cheap . Seemingly utter , but will they really run in the merciless substantial world ? So few of these promising intent terminate up passing that test . If they do n’t work we ’ll always have thosesolar powered tobacco leavesto accrue back on .

Oh , and these guys , who are work on form of thesame thing , but prettier(that ’s their prototype , above ) . In any result , the future of solar cadre clothing appear vivid , or leafy , depending on where its coming from . [ New Scientist ]
