The theme of making a sequel to one of the biggest animated film of all time somehow seems more than just “ obvious . ” “ Essential ” is likely a good word . And yet , the filmmakers behind Frozen and the approaching Frozen II say making a subsequence was n’t their first instinct and the road to get there was more than a little bumpy .

“ We had n’t been talking about [ a sequel ] at all , ” Frozen II author and co - director Jennifer Lee told io9 at a recent pressure daylight . “ [ But ] by the time we started talking about it all we had to say was ‘ We actually have an theme for Frozen … ’ [ and they break up us ] ‘ What do you involve ? Go onwards . expend some metre in the account room . Take a calendar month . Just love yourselves . ’ So we had no plans at all . ”

Six yearsafter the release of the first Frozen , the film has becomea part of our ethnic DNA . The fictitious character , the birdcall , many of us acknowledge them as well as we make out ourselves . Because of that , it ’s easy to forget that when the moviecame out in 2013 , it was n’t like a shot a striking . It did n’t even succeed the boxful office in either of its first two weekend ( one limited , one wide of the mark ) . But word got around , the buzz grew , “ Let It Go”played everywhere , and the film stayed in the top 10 for 18 straight weeks of an unheard - of , 35 - workweek theatrical running game . It ultimately became the highest - gross animated picture show worldwide … that is , until Disney ’s ownremake of The Lion King take the spotthis past year .

Let ’s be honest , with that kind of success , Disney probably would have made a Frozen subsequence no matter who was involved . Thankfully , before that could happen , Lee and her co - director Chris Buck ’s faint first ideas were enough . Those musical theme come from Buck and Lee continuing to mean about the characters long after the movie was released and was successful .

“ It was really just pressure on ourselves , ” Buck told io9 about building up to making the continuation . “ It was more about [ us ] falling in love with the grapheme whenwe did the shortand then realize there ’s so much more story to tell . These characters are just starting their lives . ”

The first Frozen ended with Elsa , the char with magical icing powers , becoming the world-beater of Arendelle after her lovemaking pull through her babe , Anna , from being an icicle . And while that ’s an ending , the filmmaker realized it was also a source .

“ Now that Elsa is back , she ’s the queen of Arendelle , but what does that think of ? ” Buck continue . “ She ’s always been hide , or in fear of , that . Now people have accept her . Great . So what ’s next . We go bad from there ”

While making the first moving-picture show , Lee , who is now also the Chief Creative Officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios , said she never could have anticipated how big of an impact Anna and Elsa would have on masses . Those chemical reaction also became part of the formula that inspired the sequel .

This isn’t from the finished film. It’s a piece of concept art that informed how the forest would look in the film.Image: (Disney Animation)

“ We kept listen masses related to [ Elsa ] a lot and for all dissimilar ground , ” Lee said . “ Some of that is she would carry a lot of people who feel high expectations or felt different … Then it would always be followed up with , ‘ Why does she have power ? ’ I ’d never thought past her being different and that , in the remnant , she could be accepted for who she was . But she ’s never been capable to exist with herself , admit herself . What is her lot ? What is she signify to do ? And all of those things were spinning . ”

And so , in early 2015 , the then jumbled collection of broad ideas known as Frozen II , was officially in the work . Things really began to come into focus , though , when the research begin . On the first film , Lee and Buck were so crackle for time ( a year of their production agenda was trimmed off at one item and Lee was only on the film for the final 18 months ) they never got to go to the rural area that inspired their story : Norway , Finland , and Iceland . That became a antecedence for the sequel and the trip pass in 2016 . However , they never could have guessed just how important the trip would be .

“ It was lurid for me when I look back on my notation , ” Lee enjoin . “ I have actual documentation of the moment we have breakthroughs in the storey . We [ came ] back with the principal discharge of our story and we [ stayed ] with it . ”

Frozen II begins with a flashback of Anna and Elsa as young girls as we at last get to spend time with their parents ( their mother is voiced by Westworld starEvan Rachel Wood ) . The floor then work shift three years after the conclusion of the first film when everything seems to be buy the farm okay for the sisters , Kristoff , Sven , and Olaf . That is until Elsa begins to try a voice in her head . Something name her “ Into the Unknown , ” as an early song is titled . Turns out that voice ties into the trip Anna and Elsa ’s parents were on when they kick the bucket in the first film . Eventually , it also takes them late into an enchanted forest , far away from Arendelle , where question about Elsa ’s destiny will be respond .

Where the first Frozen was all cold , like wintertime , Frozen II is affectionate , like fall . Mythologyplays an even bigger purpose this sentence around , especially with new beast like a urine gymnastic horse called the Nokk and a wind character named Gale . Those ideas of a timber setting , of it take place in the fall , of bringing in even more mythology , all of that came from the film maker spend several weeks immersing themselves in Norway , Finland , and Iceland .

“ There were just stunning moments of standing behind a falls , inside the vent . There was one on a glacier and in the woods when I fell under the rocks , being with wild Rangifer tarandus . Each time there were second that you see that are in the film because they make such an worked up experience , ” Lee said .

step back even further , Buck added that the general environments of the countries speak to the differences between the Sister . “ It was kind of a stark line between Norway and Iceland that framed the concept for us , ” he said . Anna felt at home in Norway with its fairytale options , but Elsa felt strangely at home in this dreary , mythic Iceland . ”

That juxtaposition of dark , mythic stories , personified by Elsa , versus the dewy-eyed , fairytale life , personified by Anna , also became a through - line in the film , though the filmmakers were smooth on specifics of how it plays out . It will likely , however , have to do with exploring some of those unrequited questions from the first flick .

“ There were some question mass had that we want to reply , ” Lee said . “ For me , particularly , in term of translate the parent a petty more and what motivated the girls emotionally as children . I love to demand those questions and [ had ] them myself . ”

Finding the answers to those questions have in mind the filmmakers begin to look at Frozen and Frozen II as two division of a single story . A second chapter needed to be narrate to complete the first . It seems like , if they had n’t amount to that realization , Frozen II may not have ever happened . At least not with Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck at the helm .

“ It was a find , ” producer Peter Del Vecho told io9 . “ That idea of Frozen II to Frozen one make it one journey . Seeing portion of Frozen one from a unlike vantage point … ” and , just like the song from the first movie said , Buck ill-use in to finish his producer ’s sentence sandwich .
