If you ’ve always dreamed of pick up the Battle Room on the big screen or want to see an actor who perfectly embodies Ender Wiggin ’s strategic brilliance , then the film adaptation of Ender ’s Game has a lot to offer up . But in its haste to hasten us to its moral about compassion in metre of war , the movie gloss over the war games and development of its tiddler characters that made the book so compelling .
looter ahead …
In many spots , Ender ’s Game is a rather well - made movie , one that performs some minor updates on Orson Scott Card ’s novel — you wo n’t hear terms like “ buttwatcher ” and one minute dates this as a clearly post-9/11 film — while remaining true to its fictional character and its world . fan will have no difficulty recognizing this as the tale of Ender Wiggin , the brilliant boy brought to Battle School in the hopes that he will prove the great military mind humanity has ever seen , our last hope against the alien Formics ( no longer the “ Buggers ” ) who assail Earth ten earlier .

The designs are not particularly innovational , but the way and technologies fit well within the universe , with episodic touches thoughtful futuristic macrocosm building . If the film interlingual rendition does little to elevate the original novel , it also does little to harm it . In fact , the first 45 minute or so are quite stunningly executed .
This is largely thanks to the brilliant casting , specially of Asa Butterfield as Ender . Ender is no well-to-do fictitious character for an role player to inhabit , a young man who is self - confident without being cocky , superb but witting of how his shows of brilliance affect others , lonely but empathic . But you may much see the gearing turning in Butterfield ’s head as Ender fall up with his next move , and his careful attempts to win over his fellow cadets experience premeditated but never obnoxious . He is cautious but not machinelike , with bout of genuine emotion breaking through . Similarly , Hailee Steinfeld ’s Petra is tough and ego - assured , but is first and first off a team player . The Valentine and Peter arc has been cut , but Abigail Breslin is still lovely as Valentine . And Aramis Knight realise a hunky-dory bonce , although his character is sadly underused .
In fact , all of Battle School seems a bit resultant , an chance to show Ender ’s prowess , but not his interior life sentence . Spending sentence in Ender ’s head as he calculates his next societal or battle move is enchanting , but watching him is n’t nearly as interesting .

At a meter when radio-controlled aircraft fight our battle and ourcompetence pornis reign by men like Walter White and Don Draper , Ender Wiggin , with his combining of competency and compassion , feels both relevant and a fresh face of empathy . And there ’s note value in that . But we only get the Wikipedia game sum-up of Battle School in the film , which does n’t even inconvenience oneself to explain the rules of the war games that Ender and his fellow cadets play . If the fictional grownup in Ender ’s Game are uneasy to promote Ender to Command school day , director Gavin Hood is even more raring . It ’s not enough that Ender Wiggin has his puerility snatch from him ; the film truncates his exploitation as a commander and his subordinates ’ increase as an army .

The novel brought us inside a polish of highly intelligent children leaven for warfare : their sometimes tearing rivalries , their vehement commitment , the ways in which they harm and champion one another , raise each up and tear each other down . But in giving us just the broad stroke of Battle School , the Ender ’s Game film portrays the children as reactive , rather than participant in a complex social structure . Consequently , the far more compelling narration is that of the adult , Harrison Ford ’s Colonial Graff and Viola Davis ’ Major Gwen Anderson , who are the single pulling the strings and dealing with earnest questions of ethics . But this is n’t a celluloid about Anderson and Graff , and it ’s not about their relationship with Ender . The focus is still on Ender , but where the flick could have a richer character study , it is alternatively a series of upshot in the lifetime of Ender Wiggin .

So , while the net act does show off some rather excellently rendered CG space battles , it does n’t connect to what came before except in a few superficial example . And the moving-picture show ’s ultimate revelation , which should be heartbreaking , does n’t have quite the right worked up weight , despite Butterfield ’s tearful performance .
It ’s clean that Hood was eager to deliver us to Command School , to Ender ’s peachy trial — but at the expense of much of the story ’s developing and of get to know our young cadet a bit better . Ender ’s Game is ultimately filled with nicely constructed piece , from its opening sequences to its haunted denouement , but they do n’t add up to a movie that sufficiently echoes the excitement or excited astuteness of the source textile .
