Even M. Night Shyamalan Thought the Original Ending ofSplitWas Too Dark

M. Night Shyamalan ’s films are sleep together for their ending . The Sixth Sense , Unbreakable , The Village , and others all have surprises twists aimed at wow the audience . His latest picture show , Split , is no exception — but the original termination was even more acute than the one that ended up in theaters .

Now , we do n’t mean the last finish . In Split there ’s a first ending for the main fictional character , play by James McAvoy , then a deed of conveyance wag , then a credits scene that tie the movie into a gravid universe . That last bit was always in there . What Shyamalan commute was that first ending , the scene that takes position in front of the mirror . Even though the film is out on Blu - re next hebdomad , we ’ll put this in in case you have n’t seen it .

So Split as we fuck it ends with Kevin ( McAvoy ) in a mirror talking about his unlimited power before we get the reveal this is in the Unbreakable universe . Well , the mirror ending was a reshoot after Shyamalan decided to cut off his original ending , the one in that ’s in the script .

You see Kevin , in the personality of the malefic Dennis , on a ceiling . It ’s revealed that he ’s looking at a school . “ seem at all those unbroken souls , ” he says . Then his accomplice , the personality Patricia , answer with “ Such a waste . ” The potential implication is that the Beast was going to punish , or maybe shoot down , shoal tike for being virgin . It was just too dark , and it made it kind of feel one note for me about what his design were . What are his motivations ? I just did n’t want the Beast ’s motivation to be reduced to just killing , that kind of affair . So that ’s why I wrote the ending that you see in the movie , with the mirror . So it was more show the world what we were capable of … the original ending is a variety of dark and gruesome ending .
