Before he was okay to chair the FBI , Christopher Wray met privately with Senator Ron Wyden , easily the discriminating privateness hawk in Congress . The topic of their conversation , one of many Wray would hold with lawmakers during his check process , was encryption . The FBI has long held controversial views on the field of study ; namely , it want to destroy it . Or if not , it want to weaken it , make it easier to break — at least , for itself .
Most expert will tell you cryptography is the science of keeping secrets , but its pragmatic foundation lies alone in mathematics . What the FBI has long desired — a magical key to unlock all the doors — is not mathematically practicable . Not without endangering the base hit and certificate of all Americans . Historically , the FBI has n’t like too much about that .
Wray was uninformed and admitted as much , grant to Wyden . He had yet to form an opinion about encryption and ask time to contemplate the payoff . Nevertheless , he tell Wyden that he would rely on the opinions of expert — as opposed to blindly advancing the docket of his predecessors .

The following month , on August 1 , 2017 , the Senate irresistibly substantiate Wray to go the bureau . “ It is not appropriate for the FBI to identify specific individuals or entity with whom it may have consulted on this issue , as doing so might place those person or entities at large risk , or sabotage other security - focused endeavor . As you are aware , however , several self-governing non - governmental experts have of late in public offered what they believe to be technically feasible solutions to this complicated problem . ”
The FBI ’s reaction is , for lack of a well word , stupid . There are pot of cryptographers , demonstrate expert in the field , who are happy to go on the record . Many have even compose books on the matter . Others , such as Johns Hopkins associate prof Matthew Green , ofttimes andopenly state their viewson the FBI ’s agenda .
