Saturn ’s moon Titan is the only post we recognize of other than Earth that has bodies of liquidity on its surface . But conditions there are far weirder than our major planet – and they just got even weird .
scientist have long been stumped by the appearance of “ magic island ” on the lunation . In images catch by NASA ’s Cassini space vehicle , bright area appear , disappeared , and even afterwards reappeared in some of Titan ’s lakes . We were n’t sure why .
A study in the journalIcarus , though , provides an answer . Titan ’s seas are composed of liquid hydrocarbon , methane and ethane , fundamentally the components of things like oil color and rocket fuel . But the lunar month also occasionally rains liquid methane , albeit only once every1,000 yearsin some locations , and carries dissolved nitrogen with it .

In experiments , a team from NASA found that when this nitrogen dissolve in the sea , it can be released in “ fizzy patches ” when the seas get warm . This could be creating gravid amounts of nitrogen bubbles , which may explicate the experience of the islands .

" Thanks to this body of work on nitrogen ’s solubility , we ’re now confident that bubbles could indeed take shape in the seas , and in fact may be more abundant than we ’d expected , " Jason Hofgartner of NASA ’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory ( JPL ) , a atomic number 27 - source of the work , enjoin in astatement .
To make their finding , the team duplicate a lake on Titan using an ethane - rich answer . They found that when the ethane cool down , it take in more nitrogen , while as it warmed it released significant volume of nitrogen gas , essentially breathing as the temperature changed .
Aside from just being rather interesting , the finding could pose problems for future lander on Titan . One proposal of marriage that has been on the table for a while is to post a boat - like probe to the moon , and have it sail in the seas , such as NASA’sTitan Mare Explorer(TiME ) .

However , this research suggest that bubble might imprint around such a investigation , making it difficult to point or keep unchanging , especially if it has to release propellers to move .
woefully , we ’ve only got one more prospect to get data from Titan for the foreseeable futurity . Cassini will be making its final flyby of the moon on April 22 , forwards of ending its mission around Saturn by plummeting into the gaseous state giant ’s atmosphere in September .
Cassini will use its radiolocation legal instrument to contemplate Titan and its seas on this flyby . But after that , it might be a long time until we get another look at this fascinating world .
