Does n’t this amazing sea quick study look like an Eames mold plastic chairperson ? We ca n’t say for sure it was the design duo ’s inspiration , but we do know that until it was late rediscovered , scientist thought “ Neptune ’s cup ” was extinct .
I love it when scientist rediscover a coinage they once thought was gone forever , particularly one that mothers once used to bath their children ! The giant Neptune ’s cup sponge had n’t been seen for 100 years , but was late spotted off the seacoast of southerly Singapore .
The species was first discovered in 1822 , and because they are so big and unusual they were prized by gatherer and over - harvested and take up to be out in 1908 . Now two of the massive sponge have been spotted 50 meters from one another by biologists with the environmental engineering firmDHI Water and Environment .

parasite expert Lim Swee Cheng , author of the bookA Guide to Sponges of Singapore , helped identify the creatures . “ My heart skipped a rhythm when I saw it in Singapore waters this year,”Mr . Lim of late wroteon his Facebook page .
