Google ’s unofficial shibboleth has long been the simple idiomatic expression “ do n’t be evil . ” But that ’s over , harmonize to the code of conduct that Google circulate to its employees . The phrase was remove sometime in recent April or early May , archives hosted by the Wayback Machine show .
“ Do n’t be evil ” has been part of the company’scorporate codification of conductsince 2000 . When Google was shake up under a newfangled parent company , Alphabet , in 2015 , Alphabet assume aslightly aline versionof the motto , “ do the right thing . ” However , Google retained its original “ do n’t be malign ” lyric until the retiring several weeks . The phrase has been deeply incorporated into Google ’s company culture — so much so that a version of the set phrase has serve as the wifi password on the bird that Google uses to ferry its employee to its Mountain View headquarters , sources differentiate Gizmodo .

“ Do n’t be malevolent . ” Googlers loosely apply those words to how we serve our users . But “ Do n’t be evil ” is much more than that . Yes , it ’s about providing our users unbiased entree to data , focusing on their motive and giving them the best products and services that we can . But it ’s also about doing the right thing more generally – follow the law , act uprightly , and treating co - workers with good manners and deference .
The Google Code of Conduct is one of the way we put “ Do n’t be malefic ” into practice . It ’s built around the acknowledgement that everything we do in connection with our work at Google will be , and should be , measured against the highest possible standards of honorable business behavior . We set the bar that high for hard-nosed as well as aspirational reasons : Our committedness to the highest standards helps us hire great the great unwashed , make not bad products , and attract loyal user . cartel and mutual respect among employee and users are the foundation of our success , and they are something we want to gain every solar day .
So please do read the Code , and follow both its spirit and missive , always bearing in mind that each of us has a personal obligation to comprise , and to encourage other Googlers to comprise , the principles of the Code into our work . And if you have a motion or ever opine that one of your fellow Googlers or the caller as a whole may be fall short of our commitment , do n’t be mute . We need – and necessitate – to hear from you .

And if you have a question or ever think that one of your fellow Googlers or the company as a whole may be falling short of our committedness , do n’t be tacit . We desire – and need – to get word from you .
Despite this significant change , Google ’s code of behavior says it has not been updated since April 5 , 2018 .
The update version of Google ’s codification of conduct still retains one reference to the companionship ’s unofficial motto — the final line of the papers is still : “ And think … do n’t be evil , and if you see something that you think is n’t correct – address up ! ”
