With a 180 ° rearview camera , Bluetooth and futuristic styling , Skully Helmetsis bestow a fighter pilot - fashion Heads Up Display to your everyday bike drive . We ’re the first publishing to live Skully in the real macrocosm .
Robert Gomez Hernandez , the Creative Director at Skully , invited me to a parking batch in Playa Del Rey and told me to institute a few Colorado - proletarian to analyse their new Skully AR-1 . “ AR ” stand for Augmented Reality .

The dramatic lines and rearward fin are sure to catch your eye initially , but it ’s not until putting it on do you realize how unique this helmet is .
Safety is the ultimate goal of the Skully , and the central facet of the HUD is the rear survey camera . Any motorcycle passenger will be intimate how limited our side mirrors are . Often , they show only elbows while requiring a passenger to move his head and change his focal distance to catch them . With Skully , mirrors are no longer a necessity . Your bike is now narrower , have splitting lane that much easy . With the helmet on , you are able-bodied to see someone standing as close as two animal foot behind you and three feet to either side . This is all seeable without moving your straits !
These three little trap in the bottom are fumes vents , pluck cool air through the helmet .

The rear view camera is also great for play dark puppets at stop lights .
The picture show do not do the experience justice .

While advertised mostly for the street , the applications of a rear view photographic camera are endless . call back about racing and being able to tell which passenger is trying to plunge indoors from behind you to steal your line . Or , how about a father taking his kids for a ride in the sand dunes or woodland trails and not having to look back every five seconds to make indisputable they are still following .

I can personally vouch that as a leader of a group ride , this will be invaluable . How about the stripling sip her Starbucks while Snapchatting her bestie justly before she address in to you while stopped at a light ? With the rear purview camera , these situations will be drastically different . Better visual sense inform better decision making .

The idea of ride at night and having a undimmed screen immediately in front of your eye may not sound like the best idea , but the rearward sight television camera can be used as an ambient light detector to automatically set the brightness of the HUD .
Having Bluetooth connectivity will allow the helmet to connect to your smartphone and showing calls , piloting , and a host of other features . These were not actively available in this first prototype , but the idea is there . Adding a Bluetooth transceiver to your modern bike will countenance the helmet to show all sort of information — revs , fuel level , etc — and exhibit the relevant info right to your centre . All that ’s controlled by voice too , impart you detached of distraction as you focalise on operating the motorcycle .
These picture do not really capture the in person perception . The in - someone experience of the HUD looks like a floating transparent rectangle out in front of your personal line of credit of great deal .

The display itself is semitransparent . When off , you could look right through it as if it were not even there . When displaying the rear view camera , or other feature of speech like piloting , transparency is maintain take into account the rider to have an unobstructed view of the route ahead . In the top GIF , you may see the video display in between the 2 layers of glass .
While not openly push , one of the most awesome characteristic was the electrochromic shell . With the push button of a push on the passenger ’s exit side , the buckler would instantly go from clean-cut to a commodious shade . This is amazing for the most obvious reason of not having to carry two buckler to deal with variable lighting conditions . The second benefit , to this fighter pilot like tinting , is the increased visibility of the HUD .
Skully claims a nine hour battery life , which should last for more than a week ofaverage commuter use , or for an all 24-hour interval drive .

While not everlasting , this initial paradigm is miles ahead of what I had expected . There were no loose wires to be found , only a small piece of duct tape , but what paradigm is not arrant without its epithelial duct tape ? Skully is planning to go through two more iterations of prototypes as they get closer to production , which may begin as early as next yr , but detail about this are tough for the startup company to nail down .
My only kick with the showing was the profile in a high contrast situation . With the bright blue sky above and dark long shadow below , it was hard to make out what was mighty behind me at first . As with most thing , practice will make perfect , and I am sure the more you use it , the more in tune you will be with the exhibit .

Due to insurance liability and other red mag tape , we were not allowed to ride with it on . Robert most tackled me when I pass on for the starter clit on my cycle . This is probably a near thing , because I will admit that using it for the first meter was taking most of my attention . I am reckon forward to the next iteration of the helmet and actually being able to ride with it on .
