The suspect in the 1996 murder of Tupac Shakur, whowas arrested in late September, has pleaded not guilty, according toThe Associated Press.

His former lawyer Ross Goodman said last month that he would no longer be representing Davis, citing failure to reach an agreement between the two,KLASreported.

According to court documents, a special public defender has since been assigned to Davis' case, along with attorneys Charles Cano and Robert Arroyo.

Davis was taken into custody on Sept. 29, marking a major break in the cold case.

Davis has been charged with one count of murder with a gang enhancement, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department announced at press conference the day he was arrested.

The 60-year-old, whoCNN reportsis the only suspect still alive, has been detained at the Clark County Detention Center in Las Vegas, Nev., according to jail records.

Despite widespread interest and speculation, the case went cold, with few public pronouncements about its status until earlier this summer, when the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department reopened the investigation.

As part of the investigation,authorities executed a search warranton July 17 at a one-story beige stucco home in Henderson, Nev. — a home connected to Davis — the man who has made public statements about being in the car from which somebody fired upon Shakur.
