When supermassive black holes turn on they are known as Active Galactic Nuclei ( AGNs ) and they diddle an important role in the phylogeny of their host galax . The new research was presented at the 232nd merging of the American Astronomical Society .

“ A big question in mod astronomy is what are the primary road by which these blackened holes arise , ” lead researcher Scott Barrows , from the University of Colorado Boulder , said in astatement .   “ One idea is that galactic fusion play a major role . ”

But not all mergers are the same . uranologist separate them into two wide family . Major merger fall out if the galaxy involved have roughly the same mass while small-scale amalgamation happen if the lot are mismatch . The squad studied black hole activation rates in both major and minor mergers .

The mergers were picked before full coalescence , allow the researchers to potentially see two supermassive inglorious holes . Their analysis demonstrate that two - thirds of major mergers led to the energizing of both supermassive black hole , but only one in   nine small mergers did .

A minor “ unification is less violent , and that leads to less gas and dust strike onto the black gob , ” explained Barrows . “ And the less textile you have falling onto the black hole , the less potential you are to have two of them become AGNs . ”
